Leonardo DiCaprio is producing Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff for TV in Tampa

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions became the symbol for the Tampa Bay area’s fledgling film industry in 2015. When making the movie Live By Night, the actor’s company chose to recreate Ybor City in Georgia rather than shoot in the authentic district.

Four years later, Appian Way actually came to town, becoming part of the area’s now-burgeoning film industry. This time, though, Tampa served as the mid-20th century Space Coast.

From July 23 to 25, Appian Way used downtown Tampa’s Floridan Palace Hotel for scenes for National Geographic’s upcoming The Right Stuff, a television series based on Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book by the same title that chronicles the United States’ first human spaceflight program.

A message from the Commissioner

Fifty years ago this month, humankind left Earth and set foot on the moon. Coincidently, it seems all these years later a few astronauts found themselves lost on the way to space, spending some time in Tampa. Eagle-eyed observers may have spotted some unusual trucks and trailers around downtown. Trailers with placards on their doors with names like John Glenn, Gus Grissom, and Alan Shepard. I'm of course talking about the much anticipated Appian Way & National Geographic produced series 'The Right Stuff,' which quietly filmed several days in Tampa.

The economic benefits of having a scripted TV series film in the bay area are many. Providing hundreds of hotel rooms and hundreds of thousands in economic spending over the run of the shows production dates. Series like 'The Right Stuff' isn't only good for Tampa Bay, but the state itself. Orlando, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, and now Tampa have all benefited greatly from this single TV series.

Film and Television can bring us closer to the stars, while at the same time making a star out of all the diverse and amazing locations found only in Florida. Keep an eye out for 'The Right Stuff' premiering later this year, and see if you recognize the scenes filmed in Tampa.

Local Production Spotlight Continued…

“We wanted to create a space in the Tampa Bay Area, where other artists could thrive. CineView believes that local filmmakers and photographers deserve a space that can help them explore their art in an environment that is non-judgmental, economical, and encouraging.”

This month, we are interviewing Chris Jackson, director and producer from CineView Studios.

Jackson says, “I’ve always believed that there are very few things in life worth doing that are easily accomplished. Looking for challenges is a basic need for me and, being a naturally born storyteller, I inevitably found the greatest challenge I could; starting a video production company in Seminole, FL. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Seeing how other professionals worked made me want to do better, to learn more, and to find the holes in their game to up my own standards on set. The quality of work I strive to provide requires a very talented team and recognizing that is something I learned very early on.”
