January Recap
Interview: Bryce McGuire explains how home plays into his new movie, ‘Night Swim'
On the surface, the film about an absurd demonic pool has an almost escapist, ‘80s camp element. Its vibe all at once references classics like “Poltergeist,” “Jaws,” “The Amityville Horror” and “Burnt Offerings.”
A deeper look unveils some pathos, humanity, and something of a Faustian bargain.
Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Film Tampa Bay
A decade ago, a visionary initiative took root in the heart of Hillsborough County, setting the stage for a flourishing cinematic landscape in Tampa Bay.
For 10 years, Film Tampa Bay has played a pivotal role in transforming Tampa Bay into a thriving hub for Film and TV production, leaving an indelible mark on the local creative industry.
Established in 2013 with a mission to promote and grow Tampa Bay’s film and entertainment industry, the organization set out on a journey that would redefine how Tampa Bay was perceived by its competitors and the broader world of commercial and feature filmmaking.
One of Film Tampa Bay’s most significant achievements has been our contribution to the local economy. We have attracted projects generating over $100 million in direct economic spending, and over 4,000 productions have worked with our organization to obtain permits, coordinate parking and first responders, close roads, book hotel rooms, and hire locals.
From bustling film sets, featuring local attractions and tourism, to state-of-the-art studio facilities, the economic impact of Film Tampa Bay extends far beyond the screen.
Film Tampa Bay is a catalyst for showcasing the creative talent within our region, and it’s been a privilege to shine the spotlight on our residents and small businesses.
By the numbers:
200+ videos highlighting Crew and Locations
30+ hours in-depth interviews with Locals
500+ hours B-Roll we extend Free to Productions
678 up-to-date Crew Listings
Beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood productions, Film Tampa Bay is also deeply committed to community engagement. Through outreach programs, educational initiatives, and partnerships with local schools, we have worked hard to inspire the next generation of filmmakers.
Film Tampa Bay continually raises the bar for the local film industry, from hosting prestigious film festivals, to attracting blockbuster productions. Each success story contributes to making Tampa Bay a premier destination for filmmakers.
With ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure, cultivate new partnerships, and attract diverse filmmakers, the organization is poised to continue its transformative impact. The next 10 years hold the promise of even greater achievements, as Film Tampa Bay solidifies its position as a cornerstone of the region's cultural and economic prosperity.
On a personal note, I am lucky enough to be a founding member of this organization. As we celebrate this milestone, it’s important for me to recognize our amazingly talented staff. We would not be as creative, competitive, or collaborative if it wasn't for them.
A special thank you needs to go to former Film Commissioner, Dale Gordon. It’s not easy to create an organization out of whole cloth. Earlier this month I sat down with Dale to reminisce over the early years of this organization. I hope you will laugh, and cry, with us as we reflect on the last 10 years.
