Thank you for attending The Flying Ace!
Through a collaborative effort with Norman Studios Silent Film Museum, Inc. based out of Jacksonville, Fl, and our quarterly series with Tampa Theatre, we celebrated Juneteenth weekend with a monumental film important to Black history, Black cinema, and the silent film era.
The Flying Ace (1926) is one of the first films in the world to portray African American actors in non-stereotypical ways, and it was filmed in Florida. Dr. Steven Ball, resident organist at Tampa Theatre, took this opportunity to create an all-new original score to accompany the film, and then play it live alongside the screening.
Fred Hearns of Tampa Bay History Center moderated our panel post screening. The discussion included Norman Studios’ representatives Barbara Wingo and Devan Stuart Lesley, as well as Playwright Layon Gray and Filmmaker Tamika Lamison, to add their unique perspectives to the rich conversation.
A big thank you to Florida Democratic Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell for kicking off the event by sharing why celebrating Black history is so important, and how she feels about the film industry in the state of Florida.
