Patricia (Pat) Hoyt, the first Film Commissioner of the City of Tampa, passed away at the age of 90 earlier this month. A lifelong patron of the arts, Pat ran the successful mayoral campaign of Bob Martinez in 1979. After recognizing that her skills were underutilized, Mayor Martinez named her as the City of Tampa's first Film Commissioner.
Seeing the boundless potential of film to influence the local economy and attract tourism, Pat established what became the City of Tampa Office of Motion Picture and Television Development. The Tampa Motion Picture Office would later be housed within the Convention and Visitor Bureau, where she served as its director.
During her tenure with the Tampa Office of Motion Pictures, Pat was instrumental in bringing to the region countless high-paying jobs through TV series and major theatrical films, including Cop and A Half and Edward Scissorhands. Pat also helped to solidify Tampa Bay as a major production hub for commercials and industrial films. Pat served on the board of directors for Women in Film, Florida Film Commissioners Association, and the Florida Motion Picture & Television Association.
While I did not have a chance to meet Pat, her influence on Tampa Bay is still felt and appreciated. When I first started at Film Tampa Bay, it had been several years since a film office had been present in Tampa. Among the small boxes labeled 'film stuff' left in a dusty closet was a box of projector slides, microfiche, and folders of still photos tapped together to create panoramic views of locations. Several stills had Pat's name and the date they were taken on the back. A reminder of all the hard work that goes into bringing productions to the Tampa Bay Area. Our sincere condolences to her family. We are appreciative of the foundation Pat helped create for our local film industry, and most of all, a life well-lived.

Tampa Theatre Presents: ‘Summer of Soul’ Block Party
On Friday, July 2, Tampa Theatre will celebrate opening night of the new documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) with a Franklin Street Block Party from 5-7pm in front of the historic movie palace.

Hillsborough County is seeking proposals for a potential film studio partner
The county could provide up to $2 million for capital needs on a reimbursement basis.
